Google’s Nest Hub Max smart speaker has just received a major upgrade and it now means this device can do something Amazon’s Echo definitely can’t. Google and Amazon both offer speakers with a screen which makes them ideal for a quick catch up with friends via their video calling function but the Nest Hub Max now gets the added bonus of group chats.
That means, from this week, you can make video calls using Duo and Google Meet on your Hub Max.
To make things simple Googe has added this functionality via voice control so all you have to do is say “Hey Google, make a group call” and you’ll be good to go.
To get started, you can create groups in the Duo mobile app, and from there just ask your Hub Max, “Hey Google, make a group call,” and tap on the Duo group you want to connect with.
And with auto-framing, you can freely move around your kitchen or living room during your Duo video call, while staying in view. In addition to Nest Hub Max, Duo group video calling is also available on LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display, JBL Link View and Lenovo’s 8 inch and 10 inch Smart Displays.

Video chatting via Duo allows 32 people to join the fun but, if your group of friends is bigger than that then you can switch to Google Meet instead.
By saying, “Hey Google, start a meeting”, you can instantly connect with up to 100 people.
If you want to call into a meeting, say “Hey Google, join a meeting” then tap the “enter a meeting code” option and type it in to join.
Or try asking, “Hey Google, join my next meeting” to instantly connect to the next call on your personal Google Calendar. Meet group video calling is launching first on Nest Hub Max.
It’s a useful upgrade from Google and it comes ahead of another big change expected from the US firm.

Google recently sent an image of a rebooted Home speaker to the team at The Verge with a message attached that simply said, “what the Nest team is working on from home.”
As you can see from the photo, this new device – likely to get the Nest branding – looks very different from the current Google Home.
Firstly, it comes in a new pastel blue colour and it seems that the device can be stood up on its end or laid flat on surfaces. This design is similar to the premium Home Max speaker which can also be placed in a portrait or landscape mode.
The US firm has also released a very short video showing off this speaker and the Amazon Echo design team might want to sit and take note.
The clip appears to show the speaker being picked up and moved around the home without any power cable being attached.
This could mean Google is planning to include a battery pack inside the speaker to make it more portable.
Amazon is yet to release a battery-powered version of its popular Echo devices and this could give Google one very big advantage.
