“Because the offence of trespass is a civil matter the police cannot get involved, and as the vehicle is on private land the council cannot help either.

“So the only options available to homeowners seeking to get back what is rightfully theirs, costs both time and money.”

Drivers could also be committing a driving offence if they are blocking access to a driveway or their wheel is over a dropped kerb.

The Highway Code also says drivers must not stop on an urban driveway within its hours of operation or stop on any double yellow lines.

However, road users do not have a right to park on the road directly in front of their house unless there is a designated parking space.

If no restrictions are in place and the vehicle is complying to regulations, anyone can park where they like.
