On an average day, the slimmer would fill up on three slices of buttered toast followed by a bacon or sausage sandwich and muffin.

Lunch would consist of a large serving of pasta, shepherds pie or a roast and she would have pie and chips or pizza for dinner.

Deciding that enough was enough, Caroline soon signed up for her local slimming group.

She attended meetings by LighterLife, a weight loss company that offers low-calorie meal alternatives to those hoping to slim down.

While following the programme, Caroline claimed her body entered into ketosis, which is thought of as a fat-burning state.

She said: “In my first week I lost an impressive eight pounds. For someone that always felt hungry on a diet, it was surreal to not feel those pangs on LighterLife.

“Once your body reaches ketosis you no longer crave carbs and the hunger just disappears.”

The dieter swapped high carb meals for low calorie dishes from LighterLife.

Previously weighing in at 17st 9lb, Caroline slimmed down to 12st 9lb in just five months.

As well as dropping five stone, she had dropped from a size 24 dress to a comfortable size 16.

She added: “Most of my life all I’ve wanted is to feel normal, to be able to shop in high street stores and cross my legs without struggling.

“After just five months on LighterLife, I’m delighted to say I finally feel normal!

“I’m so much more confident in myself and definitely stand taller now. I can’t quite believe I’ve gone from a dress size 24 to a 16!”

Weight Loss: Low-Carb, High-Fat Diets Like Keto May Help Older People Deal With Obesity

Low-carb, high fat diet may work for older adults too.

It is a known fact that as we age, our metabolism slows down and it increasingly gets difficult to shed excessive weight. Older adults with too-much weight are more prone to developing diseases like diabetes and heart ailments. Hence, diet intervention is important in older adults, especially for people dealing with obesity. So, what should their diet be like? Will the current trending diets like keto diet work? Maybe. If the findings of a recent study are to be believed, low-carb high-fat diet may actually help older adults deal with obesity.

A new study, published in Nutrition and Metabolism, claims that low-carb and high-fat diets may improve the body composition, fat distribution and metabolic health of the elderly. Researchers with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Nutrition Obesity Research Center observed carried out the 8-week study to see if very low carbohydrate diet (VLCD) could promote fat loss from the visceral cavity and skeletal muscle, without compromising lean mass, and improve insulin sensitivity in aging adults with obesity.

The study’s lead author is Amy Goss, Ph.D., RDN, an assistant professor with UAB’s Department of Nutrition Sciences. Goss said, “To our knowledge, this is the first randomized trial comparing the effects of a very low CHO vs standard, low fat diet on change in body composition, fat distribution, and insulin sensitivity using the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp technique among older adults with obesity.”

For the research, forty men and women with obesity were roped in from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) EatRight Weight Management Clinic and from the local communities (UAB, Birmingham, and Jefferson and Shelby Counties).

The VLCD was designed to provide 25% energy from protein, and 65% energy from fat. The participants were asked to consume 3 whole eggs per day along with other protein sources including meat, fish, pork, and poultry. The diet emphasized low-glycemic sources of carbohydrate, and included mainly whole foods, such as leafy greens, non-starchy vegetables, some fruits, and high fiber grains with minimal highly processed grain products and added sugar. Fat-containing foods included olive, coconut, and nut oils; butter; tree nuts and nut butters; cheese; cream; coconut milk; and avocados. A number of full-fat dairy products were included. Saturated fat from red meat was limited to less than 10% of daily caloric intake.

“These data suggest that recommendation of a VLCD in older adults with obesity results in weight loss with favorable changes in body composition, depletion of adipose tissue from metabolically harmful depots, and improvement in lipids and glucose metabolism,” Goss said.

Here's Why People With High Cholesterol Should Adopt A Low-Carb Diet

A low-carb diet has been linked with many health-benefitting properties lately. If a team of international experts are to be believed people with hypercholesterolemia (a genetic disorder that causes people to have cholesterol levels two-four times higher than the average person), may consider cutting back on carbohydrates, instead of fats to keep their cholesterol in control.

Several organisations like the American Heart Association, have suggested that they should avoid eating food from animal sources, such as meat, eggs, and cheese, and to avoid coconut oil.
An international team of experts including five cardiologists, reviewed dietary guidelines for people with familial hypercholesterolemia, they also said that there is no clear link how a low saturated fat diet could prove risky.

“For the past 80 years, people with familial hypercholesterolemia have been told to lower their cholesterol with a low saturated fat diet,” said lead author David Diamond, professor and heart disease researcher at the University of South Florida.

“Our study showed that a more ‘heart-healthy’ diet is one low in sugar, not saturated fat,” Diamond added.
Diamond and his co-authors say following a low-carb diet is most effective for people at increased risk of heart disease, such as those who are overweight, hypertensive and diabetic.

Another paper recently published in the “Journal of the American College of Cardiology,” also provided strong evidence that food that raises blood sugar, such as bread, potatoes, and sweets, should be minimized, and consuming foods like tropical oils and animal-based food may not be that harmful.

Best weight loss: The low-carb keto diet plan can help burn fat – how to get quick results

When trying to slim down, dieters need to eat well and exercise regularly. The keto diet plan is a low carb plan that is thought to help burn belly fat quickly. How does it work?

“Researchers are now showing that low-carb, high-fat diets are more effective for weight loss, blood sugar management, cholesterol levels, feeling full and many more benefits that are all attributed to body ketogenics.”

When following the plan, those hoping to slim can tuck into foods low in carbs and high in fat.

It is believed this helps the body enter into a state called ketosis which will burn fat.

Susie added: “Essentially a ketogenic diet is a very low carb (five percent total calories), high fat (75 percent total calories) and moderate protein (20 percent total calories) style of eating which encourages the body to generate cellular energy using a process known as ketosis where fats are burned for energy instead of sugar.

“When glucose levels fall short the body switches from using glucose for cellular metabolism into burning a particular type of fats called medium chain triglycerides.”

When in ketosis, the body is thought to burn fat more quickly.

What can you eat?

Those on the plan can tuck into low carb foods such as meat, fish, nuts, dairy, avocados and low-carb vegetables.

“Generally speaking it can take one or two days of restricting dietary carbs to under 50g a day (and increasing dietary fats) before the body switches into ketosis,” Susie added.

“But this switch is readily accelerated by following an intermittent fasting plan.”

Intermittent fasting is a diet plan which involves restricting when you eat to certain times of the day.

Keto weight loss: Simple rule to help burn belly fat on the low-carb diet plan

When picking what to eat, the expert suggested there are some foods that should be avoided.

He shared one rule that can help slimmers avoid foods that don’t fit the plan.

Daniel said: “Don’t eat ‘low-carb’ versions of high carb stuff, like cookies, bars, chocolate, bread, pasta or ice cream, unless you are sure of the ingredients.

“Be very skeptical of special ‘low-carb’ products, such as pasta or chocolate. Unfortunately these products usually work poorly.

Low-Carb Diet Is Effective For People With High Cholesterol – Experts Reveal

Foods like red meat, ice cream, full-fat dairy etc have always been associated with increase in bad cholesterol (LDL) in our body, due to their saturated fat content. Hence, people with high cholesterol level have always been advised to reduce the consumption of such kind of foods to minimise further heart-related risks. For the uninitiated, high cholesterol disorder can be due to two reasons – genetic or bad lifestyle choices; and the one passed down through families is termed as familial hypercholesterolemia.

A new study says, it is not the low-saturated fat diet that is effective for people diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia, rather they should eliminate carbs from their diet to reduce heart-related risks. Published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, the researchers announced that they found no such evidence to support the claims that people suffering from familial hypercholesterolemia should reduce consumption of saturated fats.

As per the study, an international team of experts on heart disease and diet, including five cardiologists, evaluated the dietary guidelines for people with familial hypercholesterolemia. After the review, the experts stated that they found no justification behind the recommendation of the low saturated fat diet.

“For the past 80 years, people with familial hypercholesterolemia have been told to lower their cholesterol with a low saturated fat diet,” said lead author David Diamond, professor and heart disease researcher at the University of South Florida.

“Our study showed that a more ‘heart healthy’ diet is one low in sugar, not saturated fat,” he added.

It is also said that this research echoed the findings of another study that was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. That study provided strong evidence that food that raises blood sugar, such as bread, potatoes and sweets, should be minimised, rather than tropical oils and animal-base

Keto diet: Why the low-carb, high-fat diet can cause this unpleasant side effect

In fact, the diet is known to come with what’s called “keto flu” – a range of side effects that many people experience when they first embark on the low-carb, high-fat regime.

While any diet can make you feel a bit rough while your body gets used to the change, the switch in energy stores can really take its toll and leave you feeling fluey.

The restrictive diet plan can cause unwelcome symptoms such as tiredness, diarrhoea, cramps, and even weakness.

Carbs give you energy as well as plenty of fibre, which is why when you cut them out so drastically you can experience unpleasant symptoms that make you feel sluggish.
