Prince Charles’ strict rules palace staff MUST follow for perfect cup of royal tea

Prince Charles’ butler must make and serve his tea in a very special way. Evan Samson, Hospitality manager of Dumfries House, explained what the palace staff have to do to make the prince’s perfect brew.

He told The Sunday Times: “The key is to use loose tea and a teapot – one teaspoon of tea leaves per teacup plus an extra one for the pot.

“The water must be heated to 70C for green tea and 100C for Earl Grey or English breakfast tea.

“The temperature of the water must be measured with a thermometer.”

Mr Samson explained how there are different rules depending on the type of tea being made.

He said: “There are different rules for making green and black tea – while green tea should be brewed for three minutes, black tea must be left for five.

“A perfect royal brew should use organic honey instead of sugar which is added to the teacup before the tea is poured in.

“There are specific details about how the teacup should be positioned – the handle of the teacup must be placed to the right, with the teaspoon under the handle.”

Prince Charles’ mother, the Queen, also has specific demands for her perfect cup of tea.

“Lastly, you should always sip from the cup and never slurp.”

Royal expert, Clive Goodman, explained how the future king Prince Charles has his staff do everything for him.

He said: “The Prince of Wales, he doesn’t lift a thing.

“He gets up in the morning, his bathrobe is there waiting for him; he walks into the bathroom, the bath is drawn for him already.

“Even when he gets out of the bath, the towel is folded in a special way so he just has to sit in it and wrap it around himself.

“Then he goes into his dressing room, his clothes are all laid out for him – even his socks, left and right, are in exactly the right spot.”

Clarence House’s staff also have to follow strict rules for when Prince Charles baths.

Paul Burrell, a former royal butler, said the Prince of Wales’ bath towel has to be position is a specific way.

Speaking on a documentary, he said: “His underwear is folded in a certain way and his bath towel has to be placed in a certain fashion.

“When it comes to bathing the bath plug has to be in a certain position, the water temperature has to be just tepid, and only half full. And if anyone gets anything wrong everybody is scolded.”
