Ukrainian strikes have destroyed Russian barracks in a brutal attack in the Russian-occupied city of Melitopol, in the Zaporizhia Oblast. A total of 10 explosions have torn down the military infrastructure, killing several Russian soldiers, according to Ukrainian officials. Footage captured at the scene shows the barracks enguled in a fierce blaze.
Another video of the strike shows several bodies amid the ruins while rescue workers are trying to intervene.
The attack, carried out with Himars rockets, obliterated a former resort and hotel complex next to a church in the city known as the Hunter’s Halt, which had been turned into barracks for Russian soldiers.
Other explosions were reported in other Russian-occupied regions like Crimea in cities including Sevastopol and Simferopol.
Vladimir Putin issued veiled threats, warning any attacks on Russian-controlled territories would be met with a military response with all Russia’s means.
Despite the threat, Ukrainian troops have been resolved in retaking all the lost territories, incluing Crimea which was lost to Russia in 2014.
The latest Ukrainian attacks come as 1.5 million people were cut off from electricity on Saturday after Russia used Iranian-made drones to target all non-critical infrastructure in the Ukrainian port of Odesa.
In his nightly video address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “The situation in the Odesa region is very difficult.”
“Unfortunately, the hits were critical, so it takes more than just time to restore electricity … It doesn’t take hours, but a few days, unfortunately.”
