Williams’ update will come as a scare to fans after Albon posted a light-hearted tweet joking about his absence from the Italian Grand Prix only two days prior to his surgery.
“Appendicitis, surgery and no racing isn’t what I was expecting this weekend!” he tweeted. “Negatives: Missing out on what looks like a strong weekend for us. Pain.”
The former Red Bull and AlphaTauri driver, who joined Williams this season to replace George Russell, recently signed a new deal that will see him stay with the British team until the end of the 2023 season at least.
Mercedes, Haas and Alpine were the first teams to send their well wishes to Albon, who will be hoping to return to action in time for the Singapore Grand Prix in three weeks’ time, although the timeframe for his recovery is yet to be determined.
