Mikel Arteta will be given plenty of funds by Arsenal’s hierarchy in order to bring up to four new players to the Emirates Stadium in the January transfer window, according to reports. The Gunners splashed almost £120million on recruitment over the summer after spending more than any other Premier League club in the 2021/22 campaign and have reaped the rewards of their transfer strategy under Arteta’s direction in terms of their on-pitch performances.
Arsenal currently sit at the very top of the division after losing just once all season and look set to mount a surprise title challenge if they are able to maintain their impressive form in the league over the coming weeks and months. It seems as though Arteta will be looking to make some exciting additions in January in order to gear up for the business end of the campaign, with the Spaniard set to have the full backing of Arsenal’s hierarchy when the market eventually reopens.
He will be given a budget of around £50m to use as he sees fit to improve his squad after lining up several priority targets, according to The Sun. It is claimed that Arsenal’s board members are concerned that their players could begin to suffer from burnout if they fail to strengthen at the turn of the year, with the Gunners currently reliant on a core group of 15 starters.
Arteta is particularly keen to ease the workload on Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka, who have featured in every single game across all competitions since the beginning of the campaign, by signing a new midfielder and a winger before the end of January. Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Douglas Luiz throughout the summer transfer window, but his recent decision to extend his stay at Aston Villa has forced the Gunners to explore other avenues.

The north Londoners are said to be looking to rekindle their interest in Palmeiras midfielder Danilo, who is said to be valued at around £20m by his current employers as things stand. He has been one of the best performers in South America in recent months and could potentially emerge as an attractive option for Arsenal when January rolls around as a result of his relatively modest asking price.
Lazio playmaker Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is another player to have been linked with Arsenal over the last few weeks after registering seven assists in just 11 league appearances for Lazio this season. Arteta is said to be a huge admirer of the Serbia international and could look to negotiate a player-plus-cash deal that would see Albert Sambi Lokonga move in the other direction, according to Calciomercato.
The 27-year-old’s imposing presence and wealth of top-level experience would make him a shrewd addition for Arsenal, who will be hoping to stay strong throughout the second half of the campaign in order to maintain their unlikely title hopes for as long as possible. However, it is claimed that Lazio could ask for a straight-cash offer in the region of £102m in order to sell Milinkovic-Savic, who was reportedly made available for an exit over the summer but ultimately ended up staying in Italy.
Arsenal have also been keeping tabs on highly-rated Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhyalo Mudryk, with several top European clubs expected to battle it out for the 21-year-old’s signature before the start of next season, while Villarreal starlet Yeremy Pino has also been earmarked as a player of interest by those at the Emirates Stadium. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be successful in their pursuit of the aforementioned quartet over the course of the January window, though, with their respective clubs unlikely to be keen on doing business in the middle of the season unless the Gunners can make it worth their while.
