Boris Johnson takes major swipe at Rishi Sunak as he hails Liz Truss victory

The outgoing Prime Minister hailed Ms Truss for having “the right plan to tackle the cost of living crisis”. Approaches on how to deal with the economic situation were the main difference between Mr Sunak and the eventual winner of the Tory leadership contest over weeks of campaigning.

Throughout the duration of the race to find his replacement Mr Johnson refused to comment on who he was backing to be Prime Minister.

He publicly remained neutral, claiming all candidates in the running to be Conservative leader would do a good job.

However, commenting on Ms Truss’s victory he suggested he had reservations about the plan for Government suit forward by Mr Sunak.

“Congratulations to Liz Truss on her decisive win,” he said.

His resignation from Government on July 5 was the catalyst that led to dozens of ministers quitting their posts and the incumbent at No10 being forced to step down from the top job.

Yesterday Mr Johnson’s close friend and former chief of staff, Lord Lister, said the outgoing Prime Minister remained angry about the circumstances that led to him being ousted.

“He’s still, I think, very sad at what’s taken place.

“I think very shocked at what’s taken place, and the speed of it,” he told Times Radio.

“He’s cross about it, but he also recognises that he has to move on and there’s other things out there.”

Ms Truss praised “my friend” Mr Johnson as she accepted her victory in the Tory leadership contest.

She said: “Boris, you got Brexit done, you crushed Jeremy Corbyn, you rolled out the vaccine and you stood up to Vladimir Putin.

“You were admired from Kyiv to Carlisle.”

Mr Johnson will depart No10 tomorrow and Ms Truss will fly to Balmoral to meet the Queen for the formal handover of power.
