The 27-year-old has made over 260 appearances in all competitions for Atletico, scoring 10 goals. However, he has suffered a long list of injury problems during his time in La Liga.
Gimenez has failed to make more than 27 league appearances in a single campaign for Atletico in his eight full seasons at the club. The most matches he has played in an entire season in all competitions is 38, which came back in 2017/18.
Defence was an area previous boss Tuchel was keen to strengthen in the summer. Kalidou Koulibaly was brought in from Napoli, though he has not had a convincing start to life in England.
Marc Cucurella has also struggled as either a left-sided centre-back or left wing-back since his £60million move from Brighton. Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva have been regulars at the back for Potter of late but Gimenez is an experienced name that the Blues boss seemingly would be open to adding to his ranks.
