Cristiano Ronaldo could be forced to turn his back on Portugal’s 2030 World Cup bid with reports suggesting a clause could be inserted into his Al-Nassr contract which would obligate him into promoting the tournament in Saudi Arabia instead. Portugal, Spain and Ukraine are planning a joint bid to hold the competition at the start of the next decade but Saudi Arabia are part of a rival package alongside Greece and Egypt.
Ronaldo has been on the lookout for a new club since he left Manchester United on the eve of the World Cup getting underway last month. He has been most heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr with the club willing to offer him around £175million per year for regular appearances in the Pro-League.
However, an extra clause that has been proposed for the deal could mean he runs into problems in his homeland. Ronaldo would be contractually obliged to become an ambassador for Saudi Arabia’s 2030 World Cup bid bringing him into direct competition with Portugal.
Portugal have already announced their intention to host the competition alongside Spain and Ukraine as the three nations look set to become the one solely European bid. Saudi Arabia also hope to bring the World Cup to the country and are looking to be responsible for the showpiece event with Egypt and Greece.

The 2030 tournament is expected to be one of the biggest ever especially given it marks the 100-year anniversary of the first competition held in Uruguay in 1930. The South American nation have proposed a bid to host the World Cup again alongside Argentina, Paraguay and Chile with the offer likely to be tough for the other nations to beat.
The hosts for the 2030 World Cup will be announced at the 74th FIFA Congress in 2024, in the meantime countries will develop their bids as the seek to become the preferred contender.
