Jeff Flake told BBC Newsnight’s Emma Barnett it is painful to watch the direction the Republican Party is following President Trump in. The former Arizona Senator added that the Republican brand has been tarnished by the leadership of Donald Trump.
Mr Flake said: “For the Republican Party it is not good for the population, the voters, the citizens or anything.
“Just in terms of what it is doing to the party, it is killing us as Republicans.
“Our brand is tarnished we’re in a demographic cul-de-sac now.
“We are pushing away millennials and gen X, those who are coming up and becoming voters, they have been walking away from the party for a while but now it looks like they are in a dead sprint.

“So, it is painful to watch really, to see my party go down this direction and follow the President wherever he goes.”
Ms Barnett replied: “Do you still think this is his election, that he is going to win this, or do you think against the backdrop of COVID-19 he has lost it?
“The polls are narrowing again in Trump’s favour.”
Mr Blake said: “I thought it will be a very difficult election for him to win prior to COVID, prior to the economy going down.
Twitter said it had frozen the account of Team Trump for posting an excerpt of an interview with Mr Trump in which he made a statement in breach of Twitter’s COVID-19 misinformation rules.
The video showed a clip of a phone interview the President had given to Fox News.
President Trump said: “If you look at children, children are almost – and I would almost say definitely – but almost immune from this disease.
“I don’t know how you feel about it, but they have much stronger immune systems than we do, somehow, for this. And they don’t have a problem. They just don’t have a problem.”
