Frank Lampard told Man Utd defeat proved one Chelsea player is not good enough

Zouma started in Chelsea’s 4-0 defeat at Manchester United.

It was the Frenchman’s first Premier League appearance for the Blues since 2017 after loan spells at Stoke and Everton in the last two campaigns.

However, Groves was less than impressed with the 24-year-old’s performance.

He says Zouma did well at Everton but that it is a different pressure playing for a club like Chelsea.

Groves reckons Zouma looked nervous against United which affected how he played.

“Kurt Zouma played at centre-half,” he said on talkSPORT.

“I don’t think Kurt Zouma is a Premier League centre-half of a top-six team.

“He did alright with Everton. You’re not under the spotlight as much at Everton than you are at Chelsea because of Chelsea’s [history of] winning titles and winning Champions Leagues.

“So the bar is a little bit different.

“He looked like a player who was really nervous to me on Sunday. You could just tell his body language wasn’t right.

“He gave the ball away in the first 15 minutes didn’t he where he played it across.

“The penalty that he gives away is a nervous challenge, it’s a panicky challenge.

“So I looked at him and thought ‘no, you’re not ready’.”

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy agreed with Groves’ sentiments.

“Based on what we saw at the weekend it’s hard to disagree,” Cundy said.

“From whistle one [he looked nervous], from whistle one I totally agree.

“From whistle one he didn’t look comfortable.”
