EX-LABOUR deputy Harriet Harman has told allies she is prepared to serve as caretaker PM, in Remainers’ latest desperate gambit to stop a No Deal Brexit.

She was named alongside Tory grandee Ken Clarke today by Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson as one of two candidates to lead a “unity government”.

It came as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s bid to seize No10 with cross-party support collapsed in tatters when other senior MPs ruled him out.

Ms Harman, 69 — mockingly dubbed Harriet Harperson when a Cabinet minister for her championing of politically correct causes — first wants Mr Corbyn to try to topple Boris Johnson.

But the Commons’ longest-serving female MP made it clear to friends that if he fails, she would step up.

She told them: “The Leader of the Opposition should be the first to try to take over and form an interim government to extend Article 50.

GAMBIT TO STOP NO DEAL

“If Parliament does not back that, then it’s for whoever can command confidence of House.”

Mr Clarke — the longest-serving male MP — refused to comment on Ms Swinson’s proposal.

The Lib Dem chief insisted Mr Corbyn’s bid would fail as “there is no way he can unite rebel conservatives and independents”.

But Mr Corbyn was boosted by SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, who said her 35 MPs could help install him as a temporary PM, and said Ms Swinson “should rethink”.

Also today, rebel former Tory ministers Dominic Grieve, Nick Boles, Oliver Letwin and Dame Caroline Spelman agreed to open talks with Mr Corbyn on how to stop a No Deal exit.

‘ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY’

But they also sent a strong signal that they would not back him for PM, saying they wanted to look at “different ways” to tackle the issue.

The Independent Group for Change also refused to support any Corbyn government.

In a worry for No10, Welsh Tory MP Guto Bebb gave a strong hint he would back a motion of no confidence against Mr Johnson.

He vowed to do “anything that is necessary” to stop a No Deal Brexit, saying he had already “sacrificed his political career” to fight for a second referendum.

He was savaged by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who said it “absolutely extraordinary that any Conservative MP considered even for one minute installing Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street”.

It also emerged tonight that Chancellor Sajid Javid will tomorrow become the first of Boris’s Cabinet to hold Brexit talks with EU figures when he flies to Berlin.

Aides said he will emphasise “how serious we are about walking away” if the EU won’t dump the Irish backstop.
