‘Macho’ footballers are risking their lives by not hiring bodyguards, security chief warns after attacks on Arsenal pair Ozil and Kolasinac

FOOTBALLERS are risking their lives by not hiring bodyguards, according to a top security expert.

And former soldier and aide to the Royal Family Alex Bomberg says that many think they are “too macho” to bother with  personal security.

The sport has been left reeling after Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac were attacked by knife-wielding thugs last month.

They are now caught up in a gang dispute after a rival gang of East Europeans has intervened in a bid to ward off further attacks.

Bomberg, CEO of Intelligent Protection International Limited, says footballers need to realise they are not “invincible”.

And he has called on their clubs to help provide appropriate protections.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “Security is the last thing on footballers’ minds. They don’t feel like they need a bodyguard.

“They are fit young men, but they are not invincible and they need to start taking their security seriously because it’s a real concern.

“A lot of it is down to machismo. A lot of them think ‘I don’t want to be perceived like I need a bodyguard’, but what about your family?

“There will be an incident where a club will get taken to court because of a lapse in their duty of care.”

SunSport reported earlier today that Ozil and Kolasinac are back in training after their gang-threat ordeal.

The Gunners duo were pulled out of the trip to Newcastle last weekend over ongoing “security threats” after they were attacked.

Ozil, 30, was accompanied by private security as he was bundled into the back of his luxury car.

But as of yet, there is no word from the club on when the pair will be back in action.

Two men were arrested outside Ozil’s home last Thursday, following an alleged altercation with security staff.

Ferhat Ercan and Salaman Ekinci, both 27, were charged on Friday and are due to appear at Highbury Corner magistrates’ court next month.
