Manchester United have been linked with Icardi at a time where Inter Milan are determined to lure Lukaku to the San Siro.
The Belgium international is Antonio Conte’s top transfer target for the summer, with his Old Trafford future uncertain.
Manchester United beat Conte’s Chelsea to Lukaku’s signature two years ago, with Jose Mourinho adamant he had signed a player good enough to lead the line for many years to come.
His successor at Old Trafford Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, thinks differently.
The United manager has made it clear to Lukaku that he will be deputy to Marcus Rashford next season should he stay.
And Inter, confident that Lukaku wants to join them, have reportedly tried offering Icardi as bait.
ESPN say, however, that United have rejected the proposal despite Icardi’s reputation as one of the most prolific forwards in the world.
The Argentina international is undoubtedly deadly but, unfortunately, controversy appears to follow him around.
Icardi’s wife and agent, Wanda Nara, has regularly criticised Inter’s handling of her husband and client this season.
And United, it seems, are not willing to take the hitman off Inter’s books.
Lukaku, meanwhile, recently praised Conte and admitted he thought the Italian to be one of the world’s best managers.
“Good that Conte went to Inter, for me, he is the best coach in the world,” he said.
“As for my future, I have already made a decision that I still cannot communicate publicly out of respect for Manchester United with whom I have a contract.
“I am a big Serie A fan, those close to me know that I have always wanted to play in the English league and in the Italian one, I love Italy.
“And then Cristiano Ronaldo arrived, Sarri will go to Juventus, Ancelotti is at Napoli, it will be an exciting Serie A.
“The club and my agent will talk about it but I have already made my decision.”
United have also been linked with Inter duo Milan Skriniar and Ivan Perisic.
Perisic was wanted by Jose Mourinho in 2017 and 2018 respectively but, on both occasions, United failed to snap him up.
