Following a miserable start to the season, Erik ten Hag was quick to point to Manchester United’s lack of transfer business as a way of reviving the morale at the club. The Dutchman had hopes of completely freshening up the squad over the summer, and he has a matter of weeks to achieve that goal.
The Red Devils have welcomed three new signings to their squad this summer, though it is not the complete overhaul that many were expecting. Five players departed at the end of last season when their contracts expired, including Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, meaning that they now have a skinnier core squad than what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick worked with previously.
Reports have circulated that it is not only Ten Hag that is hoping for a busier end to the transfer window, with players also keen to have several new teammates. United’s lack of Champions League status is considered an issue for some players who have been targeted previously, whilst others are not entirely sold on the project at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag is keen to address his lack of depth and quality all over the pitch, with strengthening his midfield a top priority. Though with incomings, there are certainly outgoings – with players sure to be pushed down the pecking order upon the arrival of more talented stars. Incomings – 12
Signing a forward this summer, regardless of potential exits in the department, is significant for Ten Hag if he is to be able to challenge for the top four this season. The Red Devils have been linked with numerous attacking prospects, with Ajax’s Antony, Lyon star Moussa Dembele and PSV’s versatile attacker Cody Gakpo all thought to be of interest.
Wolves attacker Pedro Neto has also reportedly been discussed internally, with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy also being ‘weighed up’, according to The Athletic. Atletico Madrid duo Alvaro Morata and Matheus Cunha have also been linked amongst other targets from the La Liga.
Spain is an area that United are keen to prise players from in regards to their midfield too, with the long-winded saga involving Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong still without an end. Real Madrid star Casemiro has also recently emerged as a consideration due to his experience at the very top level, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, a young player that Ten Hag is considering is Moises Caicedo of Brighton.
As for right-backs, Sergino Dest of Barca is an option that is likely to be explored with the transfer window drawing to a close. Whilst Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries is a consideration, though Chelsea are keen on the Netherlands international as well.
Outgoings – Nine
It is no secret that Cristiano Ronaldo is desperate to leave United this summer in favour of a move to a club playing in the Champions League next season, with the hope to add to his impressive tallies in the competition. There is still no obvious destination for the Portugal captain, though it has emerged that the Red Devils’ ‘not for sale’ stance has changed.
The arrival of Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia has also caused a reshuffle of the pack in defence for United. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have been in the shop window since before the arrival of Ten Hag, whilst the club are also reportedly entertaining offers for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Several younger players could be on their way out of The Theatre of Dreams in the next few weeks too, with the news that the club are looking to sell James Garner the most notable. Attacking prospects Tabith Chong, Amad Diallo and Hannibal Mejbri are also set for moves elsewhere, whilst Brandon Williams could be sold following his mediocre spell on loan at Norwich City last season.
