Man Utd target Antony makes second stand of defiance as transfer saga turns bitter

Manchester United target Antony has reportedly once again refused to take part in Ajax training as he attempts to force a move away from the club. The Brazil international is one of Erik ten Hag’s top targets with the Dutchman keen to be reunited with his former player.

Antony had already missed training earlier this week as his quest to leave the club becomes increasingly bitter. His head appears to have been turned after United had another bid rejected for his services. The Red Devils offered the Eredivisie champions £63.8million up front with a further £8.3m in adds ons however this was rejected.

The Dutch side are widely believed to be holding out for an offer of closer to £80m for his services as they are reluctant to lose another one of their key players following the summer departures of Lisandro Martinez, Ryan Gravenberch and Sebastien Haller.

Now, journalist Jonas Hen Shrag has reported that the player missed training again. Ajax are said to have held a training session behind closed doors earlier today but the Brazilian refused to take part.

It is no secret that Ten Hag would like to add to his attacking options with the Dutchman particularly keen to add a left-footed player to his frontline. The club have also been linked with a move for another of their new manager’s former Ajax men with reports suggesting he would like to be reunited with Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech should a move for Antony prove unattainable.

The Red Devils have endured a brutal start to the season after being comfortably defeated by both Brighton and Brentford. As a result, the Old Trafford faithful are desperate to see new faces arrive at the club.

They have had their wishes partly fulfilled after the club announced they had agreed a deal with Real Madrid for midfielder Casemiro however the move for the 30-year-old’s international compatriot looks as if it will require some more work despite Antony’s best efforts.

Last week, Antony told Dutch broadcaster NOS that he was fully focused on Ajax despite United’s interest. The winger spoke out after scoring during the Amsterdam side’s 6-1 opening day victory against Groningen.

“Will Ten Hag call me? No idea,” he began. “He has to discuss this with my agents, I’m focused on here.

“What will come will come, we will see. I feel good at Ajax. I give everything for this club, every minute… so I am loving this city and this club.”

However, it is now clear his opinion has changed given United’s fresh approach. It remains to be seen whether or not the Brazilian will move to the northwest with the saga set to continue into the final weeks of the window.
