Mauricio Pochettino issued Jan Vertonghen demand as Tottenham transfer claim made

That’s according to former Tottenham striker Darren Bent.

Vertonghen was left out of the squad to face Aston Villa on the first day of the season despite being one of the club’s best defenders in recent years.

After the game, manager Mauricio Pochettino explained that there wasn’t a particular reason as to why Vertonghen was left out of the team.

Spurs beat Villa 3-1, having gone 1-0 down early in the game, before securing the three point late on.

Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld started the game, while Vertonghen watched on from the stands.

But Bent believes the 32-year-old should be a guaranteed starter for Tottenham if he’s not injured.

“I like Jan Vertonghen and if he’s fit, he’s got to play,” he told Football Insider.

“You could see by Villa’s first goal their defensive frailties.

“You’d like to think if he’s fit, he’ll play.”

During the summer, it was Alderweireld who was linked with a move away from Spurs.

But Bent believes Vertonghen is someone who wouldn’t be short of transfer options, should he decide to leave the club.

He added: “And I’m sure all these other big top sides, if they know someone like Jan Vertonghen’s in the market, there’s going to be no shortage of takers.

“I’d like to think if Vertonghen’s fit, he plays.”

Spurs take on Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad this Saturday in their second Premier League game of the season.

Tottenham reached the Champions League final last season but lost to Liverpool in Madrid 2-0.
