NEWCASTLE have made a bid for £35million-rated for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to reports.

The Frenchman, 21, enjoyed a stunning debut season in the Bundesliga last term, netting an impressive 14 goals.

And that was enough to grab the attention of the Magpies.

According to L’Equipe, the Toon have made an official bid.

But it is thought to be between £17m and £22m – well short of Mainz’s asking price.

It is claimed the Bundesliga outfit could get as much as £35m for the France Under-21 international.

And the report also says that fellow Premier League club Southampton have also submitted a bid as well as other unnamed sides.

HAKUNA MATETA

The German side paid around £9m for Mateta a year ago after he failed to make the breakthrough he would have hoped for at Lyon.

He made just three first-team appearances for the French giants.

So they shipped him out on loan to Ligue 2 side Le Havre last season, where he smashed in a stunning 20 goals in 38 games.

And the striker continued his scoring form into Germany as Mainz finished 12th.

Half of his goals this season came in his final seven games of the season, including a hat-trick against Freiburg.

Newcastle finally broke their 14-year transfer record to sign Miguel Almiron in January, splashing £20.7m on the Atalanta United playmaker.

But with new owners – with plenty of cash to spend – trying to finalise a deal to buy the club from Mike Ashley, Newcastle fans are unlikely to have to wait until 2033 to see their next record signing arrive at St. James’ Park.
