Newcastle 'to smash transfer record' for Alexander Isak as Howe finally gets new striker

Many will see a mega-money move for Isak as the flagship signing of the Saudi ownership of Newcastle’s first summer transfer window. Up to this point, they had struggled to attract several big-name targets to St. James’ Park.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope and centre-back Sven Botman were the club’s only new arrivals this summer. Matt Targett’s loan from Aston Villa was also made permanent at the start of the transfer window.

Howe has been desperate to sign a new forward. Striker Wilson is set for a scan on a potential hamstring injury, while £25m January arrival Chris Wood has failed to make an impact.

Isak arrives at Newcastle with a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest scoring talents. He scored in Sociedad’s 4-1 La Liga defeat by Barcelona at the weekend, and has bagged 28 goals since the start of the 2020-21 season. Arsenal were linked with a transfer in January.
