Nick Kyrgios was slapped with a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct after smashing his racket and drinks bottle when he was broken to lost the third set of his US Open clash with Karen Khachanov. The Aussie had four break points throughout the set but ended up losing it 7-5 as he fumed at his team while ballkids were forced to clean the mess made when he threw his bottle.

Kyrgios had levelled his US Open quarter-final at one-set all when he set up two immediate break points in the first game of the third set. He was unable to break the No 27 seed but had two more chances at a crucial moment at 4-4, which would have allowed him to serve for a two-sets-to-one lead.

The 27-year-old was unable to convert them and was then forced to save two set points on his serve while down at 15-40, smashing his racket to the ground when he netted the ball to gift Khachanov the set points. The Russian shanked a ball on the first and allowed Kyrgios to escape the game for 5-5.

But the 23rd seed found himself broken in his very next service game to lose the tight third set 7-5, prompting an outburst directed at his team. “Do you guys even know what a break point is? It’s f****** sad,” he shouted to his player box while smashing a racket during the changeover.
