The Republican took 61 per cent of the popular vote, compared with 38 per cent for his Democrat rival Senator George McGovern.
But Nixon’s presidency would end in infamy with the Watergate scandal forcing him to resign in August 1974.

Hillary Clinton, wife of US President Bill Clinton, won the Senate seat for New York for the Democrats becoming the first First Lady to win elective office.
She went on to serve as Secretary of State for President Obama from 2009 and 2013 before running for President in 2016 and losing to Donald Trump.
