    Historically, when a woman ties a rakhi around the hand of a man, it is his religious duty to protect her. 

    The period for tying rakhi is from 10.22am to 8.08pm, however it should be avoided between 1.06 to 3.20pm.

    In the Hindu calendar, the festival of Raksha Bandhan takes place during the full moon month of Shraavana. 

    For those who use the Gregorian calendar, the festival normally falls in the month of August. 

    This year the festival is being celebrated on Thursday, August 15, having been celebrated on August 26 last year.
