Referee Daniel Siebert was escorted down the tunnel as Uruguay fumed at the official after being dumped out of the World Cup. Uruguay felt they should have been awarded at least one penalty in their 2-0 win over Ghana, a result that was not enough to keep them in the competition.
The final group matches in Qatar have produced some remarkable drama. Uruguay were sailing through to the last-16 before South Korea scored a 91st-minute winner against Portugal in Group H’s other game.
It meant that South Korea went through ahead of Uruguay on goals scored. Despite a brace by Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Uruguay went out of the tournament and were furious with referee Siebert for not awarding them a penalty.
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez appeared to be felled in the box midway through the second half. Siebert was instructed to look at the pitchside VAR monitor but opted against pointing to the spot.
The German official felt that Ghana ace Daniel Amartey won the ball when attempting to tackle Nunez. Luis Suarez and co. were outraged at the decision.
Edinson Cavani then felt he should have been awarded a spot-kick in added-time. However, the ex-Manchester United man’s protests were also waved away.
When Siebert blew his whistle for full-time, he was surrounded by Uruguay’s players who screamed at the official. The 38-year-old showed yellow cards to Cavani and Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez.
Players and staff continued to surround Siebert as he headed towards the tunnel. FIFA security eventually got to the referee and escorted him to his dressing room.
It is likely that FIFA will impose a strong sanction on Uruguay for their post-match behaviour. Siebert struggled to get away from the players and staff before he was finally tended to by security.
Meanwhile, Suarez – who has a controversial history in this fixture – was seen crying on the substitutes’ bench in the final minutes of the game.
