Federer could keep his record for several years despite having not taken part in the US Open since 2019. It comes amid reports that the Swiss’s return from injury is likely to be postponed due to a setback.
A knee injury has kept Federer out of action for the best part of a year. Inflammation in the right knee could prevent his expected return at the Laver Cup in October.
Federer’s most recent major public appearance came at a tribute for the departing BBC presenter Sue Barker on centre court at Wimbledon. He offered an update on his comeback.
“It’s great to be here with all the other champions. This court has given me my biggest wins and my biggest losses. I hope I can come back one more time,” he said.
“I’ve missed it here. I knew walking out here last year, it was going to be a tough year ahead. I maybe didn’t think it was going to take this long to come back – the knee has been rough on me.”
