A Texas woman is facing charges for not seeking medical treatment for her 4-year-old stepdaughter — who burned herself with boiling water and died, authorities said.

Juana Marquez, 42, called 911 on Saturday morning about 12 hours after a large pot of scalding water fell on the child, according to the Corsicana Police Department.

The girl, Amberly Quiroz, had attempted to pull the pot from the stove, only for the water to burn her head, torso and arms, news station WFAA reported.

Marquez claimed that she was bathing her other children Friday night when she heard her stepdaughter’s screams.

She told officers that she put cream on the child “in hopes that it would cool the burns for her.”

Police said Marquez never sought medical treatment and put the child to bed around 10 p.m.

The next morning, the girl was unresponsive and authorities were called to the home.

The medical examiner determined that she died from injuries sustained from the boiling water.

Marquez was arrested Monday on felony charges of abandoning or endangering a child. She was booked into Navarro County Justice Center on $50,000 bail.
