Weight loss: Drinking apple cider vinegar like this can help shed belly fat

Apple cider vinegar is made from fermented apples by crushing them and releasing the liquid. The acetic acid is the vinegar’s main active component which can help reduce fat storage, burn extra fat as well as suppress your appetite and boost the metabolism. Improving the metabolism can help the body burn extra calories throughout the day and in order to do so, drinking apple cider vinegar in one certain way can aid this. 

It is this acid present in the popular health tonic that is known to reduce belly fat as well as further suppressing body fat build up. 

A recent trend is to drink apple cider vinegar in a tea to help disguise the taste but experts believe that diluting it in water is the most beneficial.

Dr Doctor Aragona Giuseppe, GP and medical advisor at Prescription Doctor explained to Express.co.uk that drinking it in the morning is also the best time to consume it.

The expert said: “Many studies have shown that apple cider vinegar can help you to lose weight, provided you consume it in the correct and safe way.

“Adding one-two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water each morning before you consume any food or drink may help you to lose weight quicker, it can also reduce your body fat percentage, help you lose belly fat and decrease your blood triglycerides.

“Mixing with water is the most common way to consume the substance. You must make sure you dilute the substance as it has high acidity levels and could damage or wear away the enamel on your teeth if taken straight each morning.”

Due to the high acidity levels, apple cider vinegar can be extremely harmful when taken straight and can do more harm than good to the body. 

However some experts believe that drinking the diluted drink before a meal is the best option to boost weight loss results.

This is because it can suppress your appetite, helping you to consume less calories and food throughout the day.

Dr Sarah Brewer Medical Director of Healthspan explained: “Research suggests that apple cider vinegar helps weight loss by delaying stomach emptying to suppress appetite so you feel more full for longer. 

“Apple cider vinegar also delays the absorption of glucose to reduce the blood sugar swings that can lead to hunger and snacking.”

When taken before a high-carb meal, the vinegar slows the rate of stomach emptying and this prevents large blood sugar spikes.

Apple cider vinegar can also help curb sugar cravings which will help in the weight loss journey and reduce the temptation for snacking throughout the day.

Dr Brewer explained that in a recent study participants who drank apple cider before a carb-rich meal ate less throughout the day.

She said: “When volunteers took two tablespoons (30ml) of apple cider vinegar before a carbohydrate-rich meal they felt twice as full after eating a bagel and juice.

“As a result, they ate between 200 and 275 kcals less food during the rest of the day than those who did not have the apple cider vinegar. The researchers calculated that this was enough to produce a weight loss of over 2lb (just under 1kg) if repeated every day for one month.”

Only a small amount of apple cider vinegar is needed to have these effects.

Four teaspoons which is around 20ml has shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels.

Research has shown that apple cider vinegar does not significantly lower blood sugar when taken before a low-carb meal.

The popular condiment can also be incorporated into your diet through food as it is commonly used in salad dressings and marinades.

Whilst these may be less effective, it can add a sweet and sour taste to food and provide health benefits without you having to even think about it. 



Arthritis treatment: Drinking this type of milk may slow down your symptoms

Arthritis is an umbrella term for a range of conditions that cause pain and inflammation in a joint. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, affecting nearly nine million people. According to the NHS, OA initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint – this makes movement more difficult than usual, leading to pain and stiffness.

Unfortunately, there’s no cure for OA, but the condition does not necessarily get any worse over time.

There are a number of lifestyle decisions that have been shown to alleviate symptoms.

Consuming dairy has often been a point of contention – some claim that dairy-free is the way to go for arthritis because evidence suggests it can be inflammatory.

Other studies have provided evidence of the contrary but the type of dairy you consume and your body makeup may determine its utility.

To investigate this association, the researchers recruited 888 male and 1,260 female volunteers with knee OA.

During the study their joints were x-rayed to measure the space within the knee joint, which allowed the researchers to evaluate the progression of OA.

Among the female volunteers who drank no milk, the knee joint space narrowed by 0.38mm over the course of four years.

But in those who drank less than three or four to six glasses (237ml) a week it decreased by 0.29, and by 0.26mm in those drinking more than seven glasses a week.

The researchers found no association between drinking milk and joint space width decrease in men, however.

Lead researcher Dr Bing Lu concluded: “Our study is the largest study to investigate the impact of dairy intake in the progression of knee OA. Our findings indicate that women who frequently drink milk may reduce the progression of OA.”

Commenting on the findings, the Arthritic Association’s dietitian Martin Lau said: This study illustrated how important milk is in the role of reducing OA progression.

“I suspect calcium and insulin-like growth factor-1 might be the beneficial factors. Therefore a healthy diet along with frequent milk drinking may be of importance in joint health.”

Additional tips

Exercise is one of the most important treatments for people with OA, whatever your age or level of fitness.

If osteoarthritis causes you pain and stiffness, you may think exercise will make your symptoms worse.

However, as the NHS explains, regular exercise that keeps you active, builds up muscle and strengthens the joints usually helps to improve symptoms.

“Exercise is also good for losing weight, improving your posture and relieving stress, all of which will ease symptoms,” it adds.

Whilst chocolate and red wine are encouraged, the chocolate must be at least 85 percent dark.

Other foods allowed on the diet include strawberries, extra virgin olive oil, Mejool dates and red onion.

The diet has proven to be very popular amongst dieters because the aim isn’t to restrict your favourite foods but rather focus on specific food groups to activate the skinny gene.

Therefore this may mean eliminating certain foods that could lead to weight gain, such as added sugars and processed foods with little nutritional value.

The regime, which was detailed in The SirtFood Diet Book, is also thought to improve memory and energy levels and control blood sugar too.

The book, authored by the founders of the diet contains recipes for sirtfood meals as well as the juices.

Dr Deborah Lee has shared her tips with the Express.co.uk on how to consume it. She said: “Making vinegar a regular part of our diet, it seems, may well be a useful tool in our long-term battle to lose weight, and keep it off.”

She said: “In 2009, one Japanese randomised controlled trial reported some favourable results about the dietary intake of vinegar on weight loss. In this study, the vinegar used was apple cider vinegar.”

The expert went on: “By week 4, reductions in BMI and Body Fat Ratio (BFR) was seen to decrease in the vinegar group. By 12 weeks this was statistically significant.

“Waist circumference and, waist-hip ratio, and blood levels of triglycerides all started to decrease from week 8.

“Mean changes in triglyceride and cholesterol levels of ginger group were significantly higher than placebo group.

“Mean reduction in LDL level and increase in high density lipoprotein level of ginger group were higher than the placebo group, but in VLDL level of placebo was higher than ginger.” 

In another study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, cholesterol levels and the use of ginger was investigated.

The study noted: “Taking ginger revealed a decrease in the levels of total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein in the serum of rats that were treated by ginger extracts, compared with the control groups.

“Previous extracts were also able to cause reduction in LDL to similar levels compared to normal groups and that was the same effect of atorvastatin 10 mg/day.

The study also noted glucose levels were substantially reduced in ginger-treated diabetic groups. 

Ginger’s benefits to longevity can also be seen in its proven ability to provide protection against different forms of cancers.

Numerous researchers have pinpointed ginger’s anti-cancer properties to 6-gingerol, a substance which is found in large amounts of raw ginger.

A study of 30 individuals who consumed two grams of ginger extract per day significantly reduced pro-inflammatory signalling molecules in the colon which helps reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

With its numerous health benefits, it seems that sipping on ginger tea to boost longevity is a no-brainer.



Type 2 diabetes: Drinking this type of tea could lower your blood sugar

This would enable you to determine which foods increase or decrease your blood glucose levels, as well as which activities help to keep blood sugar levels in check.

In addition, researchers from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre identified two compounds in lemongrass that are thought to be responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits: citral and geranial.

The same organisation identified lemongrass to contain anticancer properties too.

They stated: “Lab studies showed that lemongrass can lower blood pressure, and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties.”

Supporting the claim that lemongrass reduces blood pressure are the researchers from the University of Swabi, Pakistan.

For their experiment, they recruited 72 male volunteers who were either given lemongrass or green tea to drink.

Those who drank the lemongrass tea showed a decline in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

The diastolic blood pressure measures the amount of force the blood hits the artery walls in between heart beats.

How to make lemongrass tea

Pour one cup of boiling water over one to three teaspoons of fresh or dried lemongrass.

Steep for at least five minutes, then strain the tea. It can either be enjoyed hot or iced.

For iced lemongrass tea, simply add a few ice cubes to the cup. Most natural food stores sell loose lemongrass tea or lemongrass tea bags.

Side effects

Although lemongrass tea is considered safe, some people may be allergic to it.

An allergic reaction would result in a rash, itching, difficulty breathing or a rapid heart rate.
