Huge fires have engulfed the second floor of a beauty salon in Blackpool as half a dozen fire engines rushed to the scene. Worried residents gathered in the streets to witness the incident as plumes of black smoke rose from the flaming building. Fire fighters frantically scrambled to extinguish the flames using multiple water jets while fellow emergency services worked to cordon off the area.
The Nail Emporium on Church Street, Blackpool, burst into flames just before 2pm on Boxing Day.
Local reports suggested the fire could be spreading to the neighbouring British Heart Foundation store, too.
Plumes of black smoke filtered through the streets as concerned residents said they could no longer see the nearby church tower as it was engulfed by smoke.
A statement from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue services urged locals to “avoid the area” while they worked to put out the fire.
It was originally believed that the PoundBakery, a cafe nearby, had set alight but later reports confirmed the fire was on the second floor of the Nail Emporium beauty salon.
The fire appears to now be under control but Blackpool town centre remains cordoned off and “full of fire engines”, according to one local on social media.
A full statement from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “At 13:40 on the 26th December 2022, six fire engines from Blackpool, South Shore, Bispham, St Anne’s and Fleetwood attended a commercial property fire on Church Street, Blackpool.
“Firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and are using two hose reel jets and two hose reels to extinguish the fire. Crews remain in attendance. Please avoid the area.”
