Van Dijk joins Ronaldo and Messi on Uefa’s player of the year shortlist after winning Super Cup and Champions League

VIRGIL VAN DIJK has been nominated for the 2018/19 Uefa Men’s Player of the Year alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The Dutch defender, 28, has guided Liverpool to the Champions League and Super Cup titles since he arrived at Anfield in January 2018.

UEFA revealed the three players that had made the shortlist for the award, which was won by Luka Modric last year, on Twitter.

The winner will be announced at the draw for the Champions League group stages on Thursday August 29.

Messi, who has won the award three times since 2009, has been nominated after scoring 48 goals for Barcelona last season.

While Ronaldo made his mark during his first season in Italy with 27 goals and ten assists.

The Juventus superstar has bagged the Men’s Player of the Year award four times since 2008.

But it is Van Dijk’s first time being nominated following his incredible spell for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The shortlist is decided by a jury made up of the 80 managers of clubs that participated in the CL group stages and Europa League along with 55 journalists.

It is understood that Alisson Becker, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard, Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Raheem Sterling made up the top ten.

Van Dijk proved himself to be one of the world’s best defenders last season as not a single player was able to beat him with the ball at his feet last season.

But he was finally beaten, for the first time in 65 games, by Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus earlier this month.
